PETER BOUWHUIS

Mr. Bouwhuis, residing in the Netherlands ”THE Port to Europe”, has traveled all of Europe’s countries and has been active on a great number of projects throughout his 25 years of experience in the industry. Peter has done on-site surveys in Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Romania, Hungary, France, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Former Eastern Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Austria, UK, Ireland, Turkey and the Czech Republic. All these surveys were for projects and/or integrated logistics projects. Some of the latest projects of interest and by example are: Netherlands Peter has been involved in a wide range of unusual transport requirements over the years – including heavylift, out-of-gauge, live animals, and…: (1)
Airline Cargo Loading Equipment for KLM
(Royal Dutch Airline) from the Airport of Frankfurt in Germany to Amsterdam (2)
Transport of large – outsized/overweight
(permit) loads of agricultural machinery from the factory in Germany (3) Stork Diesel (renamed: Wartsila Diesel)
arranged the transport for diesel engines for the shipbuilding industry (4)
Air transport of horses for the Dutch
Olympic Team to Atlanta/USA and Barcelona/Spain – a great success, (5)
In 1992, Peter was responsible for
obtaining the exclusive contract for the Olympic Spa Regatta games (The boats from the Olympic sailing teams from the USA, Canada, Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and others, were transported from various origins to Medemblik, and in a short-time factor requirement of one week, mainly by airfreight, all details were successfully accomplished and all teams able to compete per schedule.) Since the first SPA Regatta in 1985, this Dutch event has become one of world's best Olympic Sailing regattas with over 1.100 participants from more than 50 countries Several “Oil & Gas” projects are noted by example: Greece A complete project logistics plan was necessary - including preliminary and ongoing surveys, wherein Peter was appointed by Petrola Hellas S.A. for their Elefsis Refinery Upgrade Project. The great challenge was the location (on shore, surrounded by cliffs and mountains) which made it imperative that all project cargo had to be delivered by barges. In order to fulfill the project demands, suggestion and execution plan involved the construction of a new “permanent” jetty for load/offload. Portugal Peter was the lead logistics and transport manager for the movement of a large boiler from Bilbao/Spain to the Port of Sines in Portugal for the Petrogal Refinery, which is located approximately 8 km from the Port. Based on Peter’s leadership and initiative with the local authorities (15-differing bureaucratic units), the permit application procedures were approved within one afternoon, based on pre-arranged meetings to tackle any and all obstacles pertinent to the local governmental requirements. The “event” was record setting – attracting considerable local interest and notoriety, and in the end – the delivery and transport was performed on time and with perfect safety and no damage to facilities, equipment, or local infrastructure. The “event"– movement of the Boiler, 18 meter high x 10 meter wide x 15 meter long, and weighing over 370 tons (425 tons including SPMT’s), was to be transported over an unusual route, for which a new “temporary” road had to be constructed, bridges were re-enforced, and a new “temporary” bridge built. The boiler arrived on site 2 days after discharge in the Port, and then positioning the boiler on its foundation. This required unusual planning for skidding techniques, necessary, as lifting could not be done due to space problems to position a crane. Netherlands (1)
Due to a very tied project schedule, the PO-11
project from Lyondell Chemical Nederland,Ltd, presented
some A number of OS/OW (largest were 3 each at 395 tons) pieces of equipment were shipped from Korea to Rotterdam (Maasvlakte), where the jobsite is located by using self-geared vessels that could dock only 2 km from the jobsite at the Yagnze haven. Pre-planning and execution was made easier on this last phase of the transport, and a special project road was constructed in order not to interfere with local traffic. The construction of the Propylene Oxide (PO) Styrene Monomer (SM) Production Plant came across many challenges but in the end all was delivered in time and within budget. (2) In Rotterdam, the C-Sar project, presented some special requirements – especially regarding transportation costs and the need for savings, as the project was over-budget on the E&C. The solution found and executed to provide necessary savings, included the transport of 3 large columns (150–to-250 tons) from Korea to Rotterdam on scheduled break bulk vessel service, instead of a geared vessel. Loading and unloading from the vessel was done by use of 2 floating cranes and a barge tethered alongside. Discharge of the barge in Rotterdam was done at the key side of the Shell refinery itself and transported to the foundation by SPMT’s. A saving of US$350,000 for transport was accomplished. (3)
A similar operation was accomplished by
Peter at the DSM Plant in Geleen/NL whereby 2 columns were France In the 90’s, Mr. Bouwhuis conducted a project for Fina in Italy for the transport of special fuels for the Formula-1 races. Special permits were needed for the air bridge from Milan airport to Lyon. Italy The “norm” is oversized and overweight projects, Peter has also been involved in projects where it was imperative that a solution procedure needed to be set-up. By example: (2) La Rinascente (Italy’s largest department store corporation) (a) Peter designed a new and unique Customs procedure, allowing La Rinascente to import over 200% more goods (year-over-year) from the Far East – with more cost effective and improved logistics. (b) Result: Boost in sales, and a new standard set for use by more than 40 Italian companies Strong point: ”Out-of-box” thinking- “hands on experience”
